Managing Breast Cancer Through Support, Clinical Trials and Local Resources
October 1, 2012
When it comes to breast cancer, knowledge is power. Just ask Jessica Aguirre, last year’s Face of the Race at the Komen South Florida Race for the Cure®.
In 2010, Jessica, who grew up in Delray Beach, experienced symptoms that she couldn’t explain. She felt sick, but her doctors’ tests didn’t show anything. She pressed specialists to test her further. These tests proved that Jessica was right to listen to her body. At age 29, she was diagnosed with stage II, triple negative breast cancer, or TNBC, which affects 15% of women diagnosed. Because she lacks receptors for estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth, she is considered a high-risk patient. Her treatment needed to be more aggressive, and as a mother of two, she needed to move fast.
